Business 183

Last Lecture

It has been a great semester and I have learned a lot. I feel that I have been educated this past semester from the readings and videos that we had a chance to watch. I have learned what I would do and would not do if I were going to start my own company or business.  There is a lot of advice that I would give to another person who was seeking a career in entrepreneurship or a small business. The first piece of advice that I would give is to do or create something that will better the world. I have learned that most entrepreneurs want to start a business not for monetary means but to help change or help the world in someway. Most have succeeded and have changed the world and made a lot of money, but it all comes back to the impact that there product or business has had on the world. The second piece of advice that I would give is to not be scared and have courage. It is an uphill journey in the entrepreneurial world and it sometimes takes along time for a product or company to develop. When this happens it is important to be patient and let the process play. Don’t be scared to fail, its going to happen. The best entrepreneurs have failed several times before they became successful. Take what you learn from your failures. There are always things to be learned when you fail at something. Look at the positive and the negatives and figure out how to make the product or business model better. The next piece of advice that I would give is to surround yourself with the best people, because the best people will take you where you want to go. So many great entrepreneurs have stated that the people that the hired to help build the company are the ones that made it successful. You do not have to do everything, you just have to be the leader and drive the people around in the right direction. A company that I really respect is Zappos Shoes Inc. Zappos offers $5,000 dollars to anyone who quits in the first five weeks. Zappos theory behind this is that if you do not believe in their culture and business model you are hindering the growth of the company and they do not want you. I think this is a fantastic idea and shows that Zappos knows that hiring the right people is the key to their success. So long for now and I hope the advice that I gave to you will be beneficial and help you succeed in you entrepreneurial and business efforts. Thank You!

Business 283

This week went well. I was unable to  turn in my $100.00 project because I was at work. The reading s and videos were great.  Tom Nall is a pretty cool dude. The thing that I liked most about him was his humble beginnings and his desire to succeed. He stated that he started with a paper route in Plano and said that he wanted to have the largest paper route in in Plano, not because of how much money it could make, but because he wanted to have the largest paper route. I found that comment to be very funny and interesting. I liked how Tom paid tribute to all of his small jobs that he had before he made it big. He said the jobs taught him how to work and sell products. Tom talked about having determination, not to be afraid to fail, and be different. I think these are the characteristics that made tom successful and a good person. I agree with Tom that entrepreneurs are risk takers, but they make calculated risks. Entrepreneurs know when to start and when to stop and that is why so many entrepreneurs are successful. Tom is an awesome success story. It was a great week and I learned a lot.

I thought this week’s class went very well. As always the readings and videos were excellent. I really liked President Monsons talk on gratitude. I feel that I am not as grateful as I should, and I think in need to be because I have been blessed greatly in my life. There is so much that I am grateful for and I need to express it and recognize it more in my life. I am grateful for modern day prophets and apostles who are inspired to give messages like President Monson did in this talk. I liked the 4 or 5 things that President Monson was thankful for. I am grateful for friends in my life, especially my wife. She has been a great companion and friend. She is always someone that I can turn to for support and guidance. Life is definitely better when she is around. I am grateful for all that I have, and I am grateful for this talk that helped me open my eyes to try and be more grateful. In really enjoyed the e-corner videos. There is always great advice about business in these videos. One tip I got from the videos was “ Work is not fun, that is why we are paid.” Great advice.
